How to Set up CitedSpy
Shoppers increasingly start with an AI assistant instead of a search engine. Someone looking for what you sell might ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Mode a question like “best leather boots in Santiago” and get one answer naming a handful of stores.
If your store is not in that answer, you never see the visit - and nothing in your Jumpseller analytics or Google Search Console can tell you that it happened.
CitedSpy is an app that answers three questions a merchant cannot otherwise answer:
- Do AI engines mention my store when people ask about what I sell?
- Which competitors do they recommend instead, and how often?
- Which pages do they cite as sources, so I know what to improve?
It tracks five AI engines - ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode - collecting answers from the real product interfaces, so what CitedSpy reports is what a shopper actually sees.

Prerequisites
- Active Store: Have an active store on Jumpseller, on any plan.
- Admin Permissions: You must be able to install apps on the store (store owner or an admin).
- Public Storefront: Your storefront must be publicly reachable, so CitedSpy can read it during setup.
No separate CitedSpy account is needed. Installing the app creates one for you and signs you in automatically.
Step-by-Step Step Guide
Step 1: Install the App
First, add CitedSpy to your store from the Jumpseller Apps Gallery:
- Log in to your Jumpseller Admin Panel.
- Go to Apps > Gallery.
- Search for CitedSpy and open it.
- Click Install.
Step 2: Connect and Authorize
Once CitedSpy opens inside the Jumpseller admin, you need to grant it access to your store details:
- Click Connect with Jumpseller.
- A Jumpseller authorization window opens. Review the requested permissions and click Authorize.
- The window closes and CitedSpy opens inside the Jumpseller admin. First-run setup starts automatically.
What the app asks for, and why: CitedSpy requests only
read_store(to read your store name, web address and contact email, used to create your account) andread_apps(to keep your plan status correct). It does not request access to your orders, products, customers or payment settings, and cannot read them.
Step 3: Complete First-Run Setup
The first time CitedSpy opens, a short setup walks you through configuring what gets tracked. Your store address is filled in for you.
- Confirm your brand. CitedSpy reads your storefront and proposes your brand name, what you sell and your main topics. Correct anything that looks wrong - this shapes everything that follows.
- Review competitors. CitedSpy suggests competitors it found. Add or remove any - these are who you will be compared against.
- Review starter prompts. CitedSpy proposes questions a shopper might ask an AI engine when looking for what you sell. Keep the ones that match your business.
- Finish. Choose up to four of the five supported engines. CitedSpy then runs your first checks across the selected engines.
First results usually appear within a few minutes. Some engines are slower than others, so the dashboard fills in progressively rather than all at once.
Remember: The prompts and competitors you confirm here directly shape your results, so it’s worth reviewing them carefully rather than accepting every suggestion by default.
Setting Up Tracking Prompts
A prompt is a question you want to monitor - the kind of thing a shopper would type into an AI assistant. CitedSpy asks each engine your prompts on a schedule and records whether your store is mentioned.
Adding Prompts
- Open Prompts in the left sidebar.
- Click Add prompt, or use Discover prompts to have CitedSpy suggest questions based on your brand. Suggestions that duplicate something you already track are filtered out automatically.
- Optionally set a location. This matters: “best running shoes” and “best running shoes in Santiago” return different answers and different stores. If you sell into one country or city, set it.
- Click Save.
Good Prompts vs Poor Prompts
| Write this | Not this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| “best waterproof hiking boots for women” | “hiking boots” | Shoppers ask questions, not keywords. |
| “where to buy organic dog treats in Chile” | “dog treats store” | Location and intent produce a realistic answer. |
| “affordable alternatives to [big brand]” | “my store name” | Searching your own name only proves you exist. |
The most valuable prompts are ones where you would like to be recommended but do not yet know whether you are.
Prompts re-run automatically on a schedule. You can also re-run any prompt immediately with Run now on the prompt’s page.
Reading Your Results
| Page | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Dashboard | Your overall visibility across engines, and how it is trending. |
| Prompts | Every tracked question and how each engine answered it. |
| Citations | The web pages engines cite when answering in your category - including which of your own pages get cited. |
| Competitors | Share of voice: how often each competitor is named versus you. |
| Monitoring | Alerts when visibility drops or a competitor overtakes you. |
| Reports | Shareable PDF summaries. |
How to read a result. Open any prompt to see the full answer each engine gave, with your brand and your competitors highlighted. This is the raw evidence behind every number.
What to do with it. If competitors are cited and you are not, look at Citations to see which pages engines trust for that topic, then improve or create the equivalent page on your store.
Billing
A free 14 days trial begins automatically when you install the app. No card is entered in CitedSpy.
After the trial, the subscription is charged by Jumpseller on your normal store invoice - CitedSpy never handles your payment details.
The price of the subscription is 19$ USD + Tax
To cancel, uninstall the app from your Jumpseller admin. Billing stops from the next cycle.
Uninstalling, and What Happens to Your Data
You can remove the app at any time from Apps > My Apps > CitedSpy > Uninstall.
On uninstall, CitedSpy immediately:
- revokes and deletes the access token for your store,
- stops all scheduled tracking,
- ends the subscription.
Your CitedSpy workspace and its history are kept, on purpose. Your tracked prompts, recorded answers, citations and reports are work you accumulated, and merchants routinely uninstall an app temporarily - to change plan, to try something else, or by mistake. If you reinstall, everything is where you left it. You can also sign in directly at app.citedspy.com using the email address of your store, via Forgot password.
If you want your data deleted, email socials@citedspy.com from your store’s contact address. CitedSpy erases the account and everything in it, and confirms in writing when it is done. Requests are actioned within 30 days and normally within one business day.
CitedSpy is an independent data controller for the account data it holds and handles erasure and export requests under GDPR and equivalent laws. Full detail: citedspy.com/privacy.
Important Considerations (FAQ)
-
Does CitedSpy change my storefront? No. It does not add scripts, modify themes, or alter any page. It reads publicly available information and queries AI engines separately.
-
Can CitedSpy see my orders or customers? No. It requests only
read_storeandread_apps. Order, product and customer data are outside its permissions and cannot be accessed. -
How quickly do results appear? The first results usually arrive within minutes of finishing setup. Engines respond at different speeds, so the dashboard fills in progressively.
-
Why does an engine give a different answer than I get? AI engines are not deterministic and are location-sensitive. This is exactly why CitedSpy tracks answers repeatedly over time and reports the trend rather than a single snapshot - and why setting a location on your prompts matters.
-
Do I need a CitedSpy account before installing? No. Installing the app creates one for you and signs you in.
-
Can I use CitedSpy with more than one store? Yes. Install it on each store. Stores owned by the same email address are grouped under one CitedSpy account.
-
Which languages does the interface support? The interface is currently in English. Spanish and Portuguese are planned.
